our review

amended 4/22/09

We received feedback from Data Deposit Box (DDB) wherein they explained that their pricing structure is more geared towards small business. The concept is that small businesses need to backup on more computers but with less data per computer. Since DDB doesn’t charge additional fees per computer, at certain data volumes they may be a price competitive business solution. We encourage you to do the research if you are interested in a small business solution. However, we stand by our original review that DDB price per GB is not competitive compared to other home solutions.

original review

To be fair I didn’t review this solution in as much detail as others. I just wasn’t that interested based on the cost. read more…

criteria grade summary
security

Data Deposit Box uses Blowfish to encrypt files before they leave your machine. As with other providers I’m not giving them top marks because they don’t appear to offer user only managed keys.

usability

Even though I didn’t review this service in detail, I read about the features and what others had to say. It sounds like they have a good solution that works.

value

They trumpet their pricing as a feature, but I had to read and reread it several times to make sure that I wasn’t missing something. At $2/GB per month they are priced so far above everyone else that it’s laughable. Just as a simple comparison, consider pricing for IDrive at $4.95 a month for 150GB—that works out to less than 4 cents per GB. That means that Data Deposit Box is charging 50 times more per GB than IDrive. I understand that not all people will use 150GB that IDrive offers (in fact I’m sure that IDrive is counting on it), but $2/GB/month is just way too much.

accreditations

Data Deposit Box is owned and operated by Acpana Business Systems Inc. There is no listing on the Better Business Bureau site, which may be a positive sign in that many of these listings start from complaints. I couldn’t find any other glaring issues about this company based on a simple Google search. They claim to be profitable on their website.
