our review

I used Windows Vista to test Mozy on February 26, 2009.

I installed the free version of Mozy Home that allows for up to 2 GBs of online storage. On the Mozy website, I entered my email address and password for my new account. They had me complete a simple survey with a few questions and then I verified my email address and was directed to an install page. For Windows the download is 9MB and the install process was typical.

After the install completed I was presented with a setup wizard that required me to login with the credentials that I created at the start of the install process.

criteria grade summary
security

Like many others Mozy encrypts all of your data before it ever leaves your computer. They have the option of encrypting using 448-bit Blowfish encryption or 256-bit AES encryption. The difference is that with the Blowfish encryption they manage the key and with the AES encryption you manage the key. This is a great option if you absolutely want to guarantee that your files remain confidential. The danger is that if you use AES and loss the key, then you can’t unlock your files and Mozy won’t be able to help you either. They also transport using 128-bit SSL. Their security is top notch. I found an article detailing a security audit where Mozy proved to provide the best solution for a man-in-the-middle attack compared with several other service providers.

usability

Overall Mozy is a polished solution. From the outset the website looks sharp the process seems well thought out and the solution works. The setup was quick and easy; although, there are more decisions to make than some other solutions. Some people will enjoy the opportunity to tweak advanced options. For those that don’t the defaults that Mozy provides should work just fine.

value

The MozyHome unlimited plan is priced similarly to other offerings, but the 2 free gigs of storage that Mozy offers is a great deal. For households with several computers, they may only need one unlimited plan for the computer with all of the pictures and media. The other computers may only need to backup a gig or so of documents and finance/tax records—enter MozyHome Free.

accreditations

The BBB gives Mozy a B+ and indicate the reason for the rating as “Length of time business has been operating”. There were 11 complaints all of which were marked resolved. They have been in business since 2005.
